Statement on the Successful Recall of Three SF School Board Members
Families for San Francisco Executive Director Patrick Wolff issued the following statement on the successful recall of San Francisco School Board Commissioners Alison Collins, Gabriela López, and Faauuga Moliga.
“Tonight, the people of San Francisco, by their vote, overwhelmingly said they want competent leadership instead of grandstanding and theatrics. The democratic process gave voice to the many thousands of frustrated parents and families who felt there was no other way for their voices to be heard.
San Francisco’s public schools are in crisis. We have some of the worst education outcomes in the state for students of color; the school system is facing a massive fiscal deficit; and an increasing number of students and parents have lost confidence in our public school leadership. The students, families, and residents of San Francisco deserve better and tonight’s victory is the first step on the path to a brighter future.
Over the coming weeks and months, the district will select a new superintendent and finalize the budget for the next year. That requires everyone to be committed to better schools for all our kids and a process that respects and listens to all voices.
We urge the outgoing Board members to leave office gracefully, without creating any further controversy on the way out. In particular, we urge the Board to extend the application deadline for superintendent candidates long enough to attract the full range of applicants who might otherwise have been deterred by the timing of the recall election. The people have spoken through the vote; their will must now be honored.”
