Vote for Change in This Upcoming Election
Ballots will begin arriving in mailboxes January 17 for the February 15 Consolidated Special San Francisco Municipal Election.
There are two citywide elections, and depending on where you live in San Francisco (roughly speaking, on the east side) you may also be voting in a third election.
The most prominent election is the recall vote for three Board of Education commissioners. Last week we published our endorsement to vote YES on all three Board of Education recalls.
The other citywide election is to select the Assessor-Recorder. The incumbent, Joaquín Torres, is running unopposed.
The third election is the Special Primary Election for the State Assembly in District 17. San Francisco has two representatives in the 80-person California Assembly, which is the lower house of the California legislature. San Francisco is roughly evenly divided between District 19 (west side) and District 17 (east side). The seat for Assembly District 17 was vacated on November 1, 2021 when David Chiu was appointed City Attorney of San Francisco.
Four candidates are running for the vacant seat. If one receives more than 50% of the vote, that person will fill the seat and no general election will be held; if nobody receives more than 50%, the top two vote getters will face off in a Special General Election to be held April 19.
There are four candidates for the Assembly District 17 seat:
Bilal Mahmood - FAMILIES FOR SAN FRANCISCO ENDORSEMENT
We are endorsing Bilal Mahmood because we are impressed by his experience, his energy, and his policies. We have read the campaign materials for each candidate and we have watched several debates between the candidates. Bilal is the only candidate who combines smart, common sense thinking with the fresh perspective we believe San Francisco needs and craves.
